The technology to produce fuel-efficient cars was already available decades ago. Nowadays consumers are looking for more fuel efficiency. Why then, does it take so long before we can buy these cars and drive around cheap and environmentally friendly?

This Dutch documentary, which is in English for the biggest part, tells us the sad story of how the huge car and oil companies are blocking innovation. But small companies and individual projects are not waiting for them anymore.

A must see!

  1. 159KM on one liter? Damn!

A modern light car would reach even more since it weighs less and thus uses less fuel. And it was built out of a garage so it could be improved a lot.

    Comparison:
    Renault Clio 1.5 – 45 liter tank – 1000-1200KM
    Test car – 45 liter tank – 7155KM

  2. I think it takes so long to improve cars for three reasons: One there are so many dumb a$$es in the world who are buying SUVs. Two There are so many dumba$$es buying sportcars and just awesome looking cars and three there are a whole lot of smart people or people who just think their smart bit@hing about it on the sidelines. If you can get past the conspiracy bull… watch the leaders of design tell you what they think is important in car design… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2KS2OHb0-4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9Bs8pmj9QQ&feature=PlayList&p=6DF744821C91A772&index=71

Take a look at those and then go and get a degree in engineering and try to change the cars yourself.

  3. I disagree with you Plemke1. Ik think the main problem is breaking through in the car market as a small company. Tesla has millions of funding and still doesn’t even make a dent in traditional market share.

  4. Small car companies/initiatives that are successful will open people’s eyes. Also the eyes of investors. What starts out as a small company can turn out to become a big company. Change is possible and I think we’re at a point in time where things are going to change. In a lot of ways.

@plemke1: The fact that people want to buy nice looking vehicles doesn’t make them ‘dumb a-s’. It just means that people appreciate something which looks good. Combining fuel efficiency with something that looks good is possible.

PS I’d appreciate it if you would leave out the terms like ‘dumb a-s’. It’s just people that aren’t aware of the consequences of some of their actions yet… That’s all.

  5. Do you guys even know what government regulations you have to comply with in order to even make a car? This is why Tesla needs millions. Also I have met Elon Musk the owner of Tesla. I met him while working on his rocket for his spacex company. I think he is what America is sorely lacking right now. I would love if everyone in this forum could buy a Tesla unfortunately I doubt they can because the car costs so damn much. Your right Pixel it won’t make a dent because … It’s just people that aren’t aware of the consequences of some of their actions yet. —–> And this is what I call a dumb ___. Fill in the blank.
